My first blogging experience

Earlier this week I created my first blog, which you are now visiting!  I decided to use Blogger to create my blog because it seemed to be one of the programs mentioned the most often.  The process of creating the blog was very easy.  I think the hardest part was trying to figure out what I wanted to call it!  Although this blog is being created for a class I am taking at USF, I think I would enjoy continuing it after finishing the class.  I just need to figure out what audience I would like to target and what I would like to blog about.  I am hoping as this semester progresses, I will get some ideas on that!

I had lots of fun working on the design of the page, although the choices are a bit overwhelming.  I started looking at the gadgets that are available to you to add to your blog through blogger.com.  There sure are a lot of options.  One of the things I didn't like about the gadgets is that a lot of them seemed to include some sort of advertising attached to them.  If you decided to add the gadget to your blog, you ended up with the advertising too.  I wasn't too keen on that.  I ended up sticking with gadgets to add text that I created and pictures that I have taken myself.  As you can probably tell from looking at my blog, I love to travel and take pictures! 

As for how libraries can use blogs....the uses are limited only by our imagination and creativity.  One idea I read in a book I checked out from the library (surprise, surprise!), talked about using a blog to tell about library renovations.  That struck a chord with me because my local branch is going to be enlarged in the next couple of years.  I think it would be cool to see pictures of before, after, and during the renovation.  Libraries can use blogs to tell about the services they offer, advertise events like the upcoming 6th Anniversary celebration we are having at my local library next weekend, tell about new acquisitions, book reviews and recommendations, and even use the blog to keep patrons up on current events in either the local community, the US or the world.  Blogrolls can be used to include a list of recommended links on the blog.  Those links could include links to services offered in the community targeted to different audiences such as seniors, teens, or peole who just moved nearby.  Again, the uses are limitless!

By the way, my local branch that I keep referring to is the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Library in.....you guess it....Tampa!
